Why I Do What I Do

My mother started her long two year battle with lung cancer in 1989 before finally succumbing to it’s grip in 1991. I was 11 years old by then and my life changed drastically in the time that followed her death.

Fast forward 25 years and I could barely recall the memories we shared. It felt like I’d lived a few lifetimes since then. Unbeknownst to me, my uncle’s creative curiosity was ahead of his time and he managed to capture videos from a time long forgotten. He shared old cassettes with me that he’d kept over the years. 

Hearing my mother’s voice and seeing her come to life after decades was…indescribable.

I felt that much closer to her and began to see a side to the woman I didn’t get the chance to know. Her sense of humor boomed from the television screen as I stayed glued to her every movement.

From that moment, I learned how to preserve these priceless memories and transfer to digital media. Burned DVD copies made excellent gifts for other family members who missed the same woman I did. Younger generations were now able to witness first-hand the grandmother they’d never meet.
